Review from the "The Lymington Times, 13 November 2004

The New Forest Big Band has just returned from a successful concert in Yerville, Normandy, the town which has been twinned with Hordle for 16 years.  An audience of 150 enjoyed the show and the band received a standing ovation at the end of two encores.

The Mayor of Yerville, Alfred Trassy-Paillogues welcomed the band and said how delighted he was to hear the music of the 40s recreated in Yerville.  Councillor John Hoy, who organised the trip to France, replied that it was one more link forged between the two communities in the form of music.

The band, which was formed several years ago, is led by Doreen Pullen, of Hordle, and plays a range of swing music, including that performed by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington,Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, and other orchestras of the 40s and 50s.  Their singer, Angela Jackson, was the star of the show.

Review from "Southern Daily Echo", March 2003:

Civic leaders from Hampshire and neighbouring Dorset were among 180 people who converged on the plush Forest Room at Hoburne Bashley Park for one of the New Forest's big fundraising nights out.  Among the diners was New Forest West MP Desmond Swayne and his wife Moira.  But New Forest Council chairman John Hoy's charity ball was more than just a fundraiser.  It was a night to remember with a carefully chosen menu and some of the best big band music on offer in the South.

The 19-piece New Forest Big Band, led by Doreen Pullen, with Angela Jackson as its vocalist, provided the entertainment and Councillor Hoy said:  "I'm a big band enthusiast and I'm one of their biggest fans.  I was always very keen on the music of people like Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller, and this band gets very close to the sounds they made".

Review from "The Lymington Times", December 2002:

The dullest and wettest of Saturday December evenings at Pennington was brightened considerably by a much appreciated appearance of the New Forest Big Band.  The conducting and instrumental skills of Doreen Pullen contributed much to the evening's warmth of occasion.  Members of the band were introduced to the audience in a light-hearted way that created a friendly bond between each performer and those in the Pennington WI Hall audience.  The programme was an imaginative blend of established favourites and some well enjoyed lesser known works.  Many of the pieces used, aided by helpful comments from Doreen, allowed for identified individual contributions as well as impressive teamwork qualities.

Included in the programme  were classics such as "Tuxedo Junction", "My Prayer", "Moonlight Serenade", St. Louis Blues", "In the Mood", and an arrangement of "Silent Night".

Angela, a singer of gifted talent, added much to the evening with her exceptional rendering of numbers ranging from "Night & Day", I'm Gonna Sit Right Down", and "Let it Snow", to an intriguing tale concerning, as Angela described it, a "buzzard and a monkey".

... All in all, on a winter's night, an occasion to remember with warmth.
